Winter Break For Schoolchildren Has Been Extended By Three Days This Year

The Ministry of Education explained the reason behind this.

The Belarusian Ministry of Education has finalized the school vacation schedule for the 2026–2027 school year. This winter, students can look forward to a longer break than usual: they will return to school not on January 8, as was the case in 2025 and 2026, but on January 11. This change surprised one Belarusian, who decided to check with the ministry to see if students would have to make up for the extra days off later. He received an official response to this question.

For most students, the school year will run from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027, and the breaks will be distributed as follows:

8 days of fall break (November 1–8);
17 days of winter break (December 25–January 10);
8 days of spring break (March 21–28);

92 days of summer break (June 1 through August 31).

For comparison: in the 2025–2026 school year, the duration of the fall, spring, and summer breaks was the same for most students, but the winter break lasted only 14 days. That is why one parent contacted the Ministry of Education to ask why the winter break had been extended by three days this time and whether those days would need to be made up later. He posted the response he received in one of the parent chat groups.

The ministry explained that, according to the Education Code, the total duration of breaks during the school year must be at least 30 calendar days, and for first- and second-grade students—at least 37 days.

“Given that school breaks are scheduled intervals for rest during the implementation of educational programs in full-time education, the law does not provide for making up classes during this period,” — according to the Ministry of Education’s response.

The man also asked whether winter breaks would remain the same length in the future, but the ministry was unable to answer that question.
