China And India Have Resumed Their Border Dispute

An important agreement has been reached.

On Tuesday, August 25, China and India agreed to continue their dialogue and work toward a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution” of the border issue following talks in Beijing.

This was reported by Reuters.

It is important to note that China and India are two of the world’s most populous countries, both of which possess nuclear weapons and share a border approximately 3,800 km long. However, this border is largely undemarcated and disputed in the Himalayas, which led to a clash between the two countries in that area in 2020 (the terrain there is mountainous, making it impossible to mark the border).

Returning to the talks on August 25, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that its minister Wang Yi and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held “comprehensive, in-depth, friendly, and candid” discussions on border issues and bilateral relations.

The Indian Embassy in China confirmed on social media that both sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to further expand cooperation and maintain stability and peace in border areas.

What Led Up to This and What to Expect Now

Reuters reports that relations between China and India have gradually improved in recent years following the deadly border clash of 2020, which led to a four-year military standoff, before an agreement on the withdrawal of troops was reached in October 2024.

Last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years, signaling a thaw in relations. And just recently, a new border dispute sparked a sharp diplomatic exchange between the two countries.

“Both sides must learn from historical experience, give the border issue its proper place in bilateral relations, and move forward without stagnation, regression, or deviation,” the Chinese foreign minister quoted his Indian counterpart, with whom he held talks on August 25.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement also announced that the countries had agreed to hold the next round of talks on the border issue in India. The meeting will take place in 2027.
