Kellogg Recounted A Conversation Between Trump And Zelenskyy Regarding Russia's Occupation Of Crimea

The President of Ukraine "cornered" the American leader.
The former U.S. President’s Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said that until a recent conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Donald Trump was unaware of the number of Ukrainian casualties during Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014.
Kellogg made this statement in an article published on August 25 interview for Natalia Moseychuk's YouTube channel .
According to him, the conversation began while President Zelenskyy was in the Oval Office of the White House—and there, in particular, hung a large map depicting Crimea.
“President Trump asked him, ‘How many soldiers did you lose in Crimea?’ Zelenskyy replied: ‘One. We lost one because you told us not to fight.’ Trump didn’t know that. Every administration is different from the one before it, but I didn’t see any regret or disappointment regarding support for Ukraine,” Kellogg said.
As the former U.S. presidential special envoy clarified, the president “personally dislikes conflict,” and casualties “weigh heavily on him.” At the same time, according to Kellogg, the White House chief did not pressure President Zelenskyy to voluntarily cede the part of the Donetsk region under Kyiv’s control.
“It seems this became clear during the summit in Alaska (in August 2025 in Anchorage—Ed.). I think Putin hoped that Trump would pressure Zelenskyy to hand over the remaining parts of Donetsk Oblast to him. That didn’t happen. After all, Trump essentially said the same thing I did: ‘If you want this land—fight for it,’” Kellogg concluded.
