Lithuania Begins Producing Drones For Ukraine

The parties have already begun implementing the Drone Deal.

Lithuania is preparing to localize the production of Ukrainian drones on its territory as part of a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the defense industry. This was announced by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas, according to LRT. According to him, the parties have already begun the practical implementation of the “Drone Deal”—an agreement signed in May by the presidents of Ukraine and Lithuania, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Gitanas Nausėda. A special team is being formed within the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense to oversee the launch of Ukrainian drone production in the country.

The drones are planned to be manufactured in Lithuania using Ukrainian technology. The project involves joint investments and is intended to simultaneously expand Ukraine’s production capabilities and strengthen the Lithuanian defense industry. Officials in Vilnius expect that localizing production will accelerate drone production, facilitate the adoption of new technologies, and engage Lithuanian engineers to work alongside Ukrainian specialists.

Earlier, Elius Čivilis, head of the Invest Lithuania agency, reported that several Ukrainian defense companies had already received permission to operate in the country after undergoing a security clearance review. In June, the Lithuanian Minister of Defense also invited the Ukrainian-founded company LuxUAV to conduct tests of its drones on Lithuanian territory.

Amid expanding cooperation with Ukraine, Lithuania is also discussing lifting the constitutional ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons and foreign military bases. NATO is considering options for strengthening nuclear deterrence in Europe. According to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, Poland, Finland, and Lithuania are among the potential sites for the deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the alliance is discussing the adaptation of its nuclear capabilities. Details of these plans have not been disclosed.
