CDU Leaders From German States Expressed Their Support For Mertz

Pressure on the German chancellor is mounting ahead of the elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Eight state premiers from Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have expressed their support for Chancellor Friedrich Merz amid the heated debate over his political future. “People can be assured that we are working to solve their problems. As state premiers, we want to and will continue to contribute to this effort together with the federal chancellor,” the joint statement reads, published on Wednesday, September 16, four days before the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

The authors of the statement are convinced that the path to restoring voters’ trust lies in the ability to listen to people and in concrete political steps, not in personnel changes. “Political Germany needs stability now more than ever. Under these circumstances, unity, the ability to act, and a clear course of action by the German Christian Democrats are particularly important,” the document states.

The heads of state governments emphasized that the German federal government must address the problems and answer the questions that people face in their daily lives. They categorically rejected the idea of a minority government and reaffirmed their willingness to cooperate with “all democratic forces”— —this wording reaffirmed the decision of the 2018 party convention, which ruled out cooperation with the Left Party and the right-wing populist “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), notes DW reports, citing the dpa news agency.

The CDU’s dismal showing in the Saxony-Anhalt election has put intense pressure on Merz within his party. For several days now, there has been speculation about whether he will be able to retain his position as chancellor. Influential state premiers had previously refrained from weighing in on this debate, but have now dismissed talk of personnel changes.

Observers believe that if the CDU fails in the upcoming state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, the pressure on Merz could increase even further. Friedrich Merz himself stated on September 15 at a meeting with representatives of the Federal Association of Wholesale and Foreign Trade that he has no intention of stepping down from his post before the upcoming Bundestag elections and wants to prove that the ruling coalition he leads “is capable of pursuing a policy of reform.”

Merz has scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the CDU leadership for the evening of September 20, when state elections will be held in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin. Meetings of other party leadership bodies are also scheduled for September 21. At that time, the question of Friedrich Merz’s future as chancellor and CDU chairman will likely be decided, according to dpa.
