Zelensky On Russia's Losses This Year: 21 Countries In The World Have Smaller Populations

From January through August 2026, the Russian military lost 248,000 service members on the battlefield in Ukraine (killed and wounded). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement on September 23 during his address to the UN General Assembly, which was broadcast by "Suspilne".

“There are 21 countries in the world with smaller populations than the number of Russians lost in just eight months. We have video evidence of each of these losses. And these aren’t just statistics. These are people. It’s horrific,” said the President of Ukraine.

The president also noted that Russia has managed to seize only 1,000 km² of Ukrainian territory this year, and Ukraine has already liberated a significant portion of it.

“Russia has thousands of square kilometers of its own territory. And for just a few kilometers, Putin is paying with the lives of his own people. There is absolutely no sense in this,” Zelenskyy added.
