Europe Has Criticized Putin's Invitation To The G20 Summit

The EU intends to use the meeting to condemn the war against Ukraine.

The European Union intends to use the upcoming G20 summit in Miami to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, regardless of whether Putin attends the meeting. The U.S. has officially invited the Russian president to the summit, which will take place in December; however, Brussels has stated that Moscow’s presence will not affect the EU’s position, according to Euronews.

European Commission spokesperson Olaf Gill stated that Russia itself has caused many of the problems being discussed at the G20 forum. “Since 2022, the EU has consistently and resolutely used G20 meetings to condemn Russia’s full-scale invasion and call for its end,” he said.

According to him, this approach will remain in place regardless of the composition of participants at the upcoming summit.

The invitation to Putin was initiated by the United States, which holds the G20 presidency this year. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the meeting should give the Russian president an opportunity to speak not only with U.S. President Donald Trump, but also with other world leaders. The Kremlin confirmed receipt of the invitation and said it would review it.

Putin has not attended G20 summits in person since the war began. The last time he attended a G20 leaders’ meeting was in 2019 in Osaka.

Washington’s initiative has already sparked a mixed reaction in Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that inviting Putin could encourage Moscow to continue its aggression against Ukraine.

At the same time, Kyiv is ready to use the summit to promote the idea of direct negotiations. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would support a possible trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin if the parties agree on such a format.

The EU’s position, however, does not depend on whether the Russian president appears in Miami. “This approach will continue regardless of the participants in any G20 meeting,” the European Commission emphasized.
