In the letter, which was sent to various Reserve commands, headquarters inquires whether it would be possible to make available to U.S. Southern Command a military police brigade, a medical brigade, an advanced surgical team, a logistics battalion, an engineering battalion, and other support forces.

According to the report, the units “may be needed in 90 to 120 days.” U.S. Southern Command is responsible for military operations and security cooperation in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The letter makes no mention of Cuba; CBS News reporters made this assumption themselves and received confirmation from their sources.

The document also does not specify how many personnel might be needed, where they might be deployed, or whether any units have already received deployment orders. When contacted by CBS News, U.S. Southern Command declined to comment on the information, citing “operational security considerations.”
