Trump Revealed Details Of His Conversation With Xi Jinping About Taiwan

The U.S. position has not formally changed.

The issue of Taiwan came up during talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, but the two sides did not pay much attention to it. Trump told reporters this, according to Bloomberg.

“We didn’t talk about it too much. Everything is fine right now. Things are just moving forward. We didn’t spend much time talking about Taiwan. He understands my feelings perfectly,” he said.

At the same time, the Chinese statement on the bilateral meeting noted that Xi Jinping called on Washington to oppose Taiwan’s independence. Trump gave no indication that he was prepared to meet Xi’s demand to change the U.S. position.

The publication emphasized that the U.S. position has not formally changed. Washington does not support Taiwan’s declaration of independence and opposes any unilateral change to the status quo by either Beijing or Taipei. At the same time, U.S. policy regarding whether the United States would intervene in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan remains deliberately ambiguous.
