Operation "Vivaldi": The Ukrainian Armed Forces Sent Kamikaze APCs Against The Russians

The occupiers mistook the robotic vehicles for reinforcements.

During Operation Vivaldi, fighters from the Third Assault Brigade carried out a unique sabotage maneuver in the towns of Novoye and Katerinovka in the Liman sector. The defenders converted old equipment into unmanned kamikaze robots and blew up the Russian invaders.

As noted, the Third Army Corps converted two Soviet armored personnel carriers into ground-based robotic systems (GRS), loaded them with explosives, and sent them into the enemy’s rear.

“While the enemy thought it was facing reinforcements, the unmanned vehicles blew up its most powerful fortifications,” the soldiers stated.

They added that the blast’s power was comparable to that of a guided bomb, and it resulted in the destruction of the enemy’s communications and command center.

In turn, experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), in a report dated September 28, analyzing the third phase of Operation “Vivaldi” and the use of BTR-80s as explosive devices to breach Russian defenses, noted that during this maneuver, Ukrainian fighters managed to avoid strikes by Russian drones. This may indicate that the Defense Forces neutralized or destroyed Russian counter-UAV capabilities.

Ukrainian forces conducted large-scale battlefield preparation operations and a campaign of strikes to reduce the threat posed by Russian drones and electronic warfare (EW) systems, as well as to secure a tactical advantage in the use of UAVs. This facilitated the advance of Ukrainian mechanized units in the Lyman direction, the ISW concluded.
