Commander of Russian-Belarusian air defence forces to be appointed by Medvedev and Lukashenka

On October 23, Commander-In-Chief of the Air Forces of the Russian Federation Colonel General Aleksandr Zelin told that the air defence system would be headed by a commander of air forces and air defence forces of one of the sides, who will be appointed by the heads of the two countries.

According to the Commander-In-Chief, the field strength of the Russian-Belarusian regional air defence system will consist of five aviation units, 10 air defence missile units, five radio-radar units, one electronic warfare unit, BelaPAN reports with a reference to RIA Novosti.

An agreement on creating Russian-Belarusian joint regional air defence system is to be signed in the nearest time. “All necessary documents have been submitted for approval of the military administrations of Russia and Belarus,” A. Zelin said.

Belarus will be the first layer of defence of air frontier of the “union state”, the colonel general said. “In the frames of this system, Belarusian forces of air defence will be reinforced with the help of Russia. Russia in its turn will receive the same reinforcement from Belarus,” A. Zelin stressed.

According to him, creating of the regional air defence system will allow to increase radar control of low and ultra low levels at the western borders of the “union state” - from the Baltic countries to Ukraine.
