Zhirinovsky threatens to cut off Dnieper water for Belarus and Ukraine

The scandalous Russian politician again threatens to dam the Dnieper River near Smolensk.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the vice speaker of the State Duma, said it on TV, reacting to remarks that Ukraine may cut off water supply to occupied Crimea.

“We'll construct a dam in the village of Krasny [a village in the Smolensk Oblast 15 km from the Russian-Belarusian border]. The analysis is ready. Our governor Aleksei Ostrovsky will be in charge of construction works. It will take five or six months. Scientists and engineers are already working. All water from the Dnieper will run in Russia through canals to the Don River and then to the Black Sea,” he said.

Vladimir Zhirinovski, who is known for his scandalous statements, proposed last year to deprive Belarus and Ukraine of water by diverting the Dnieper water to the Don or the Desna. According to him, Moscow scientists already work on the project. Governor of the Smolensk Oblast, a member of Zhirinosky-led LDPR party, says he will support the idea if the Russian authorities take such a decision.

The length of the Dnieper in Belarus is 595 kilometres.
