In the morning of July 10, at the age of 88, Mikalai Dzemiantsei, the former chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, died, Narodnaya Volia reports. The details about the cause of death are not reported.

Mikalai Dzemiantsei work his way from the instructor of the Vitsebsk regional committee to the secretary of the Vitsebsk regional committee of the Communist Party of Byelorussia, was elected as a people's deputy of the BSSR in 1989, he worked as chairman of the Supreme Council of the BSSR in 1989-1991.

In 1991, Mikalai Dzemiantsei announced his retirement, but in 1997-2000, he was a member of the republic's council due to Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s quota.

During Dzemiantsei’s presidency, the Supreme Council adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of the Belarusian SSR (Dzemiantsei himself voted "for"). Later Dzemiantsei supported the Emergency Committee during the putsch in Russia. On September 9, 1991 he was replaced at the post by Stanislau Shushkevich.
