Britain Announces Name Of New Prime Minister

The current head of Britain's Foreign Office, Liz Truss, has become the new prime minister.

The United Kingdom appointed a new prime minister on Monday, September 5. The incumbent British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is the new Prime Minister.

Truss replaces Boris Johnson in the position.

Truss' main rival for the premiership was former finance minister Rishi Sunak. But in the end, Sunak got half as many votes as Truss.

The vote was on candidates for the post of Conservative Party chief. This position automatically leads to the premiership, which is what happened to Truss today.

Note that Truss became the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

Johnson is due to make his last speech to Parliament today before heading to Balmoral Manor in Scotland, where Britain's Queen Elizabeth II will accept his resignation as Prime Minister.

The monarch will then receive Truss and formally ask her to form a government under her. Following this ceremony, Truss will go to his residence in Downing Street and give a speech outlining his priorities as head of government.

Biography

Elizabeth Truss is 47 years old. Born in Oxford. Studied politics, economics and philosophy at Oxford University. She supported the Conservative Party as a student.

She first became a member of the House of Commons in 2010 and two years later was made Minister for Education. In 2014, Truss was appointed Minister for the Environment. In Theresa May's cabinet, she was head of the Ministry of Justice and then became Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Following the election of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister in 2019, Liz Truss remained in government but was moved to the post of Foreign Trade Secretary. Since September 2021 she has been UK Minister for Foreign Affairs.
