During his 81 years of life, the representative of the Christian Democratic Union held the positions of Minister of the Interior, Minister of Finance of Germany and Chairman of the Bundestag. In 1990, as head of the Interior Ministry of Germany, he played an important role in the unification of West and East Germany.

At that time, a mentally ill man made an attempt on his life, shooting the minister several times with a pistol. Since then, the politician has been confined to a wheelchair.

This did not break his spirit, he continued his political career for more than 30 more years. It was not until 2021 that he retired from politics. Schäuble had a wife, four children and four grandchildren.
