There is an awareness of the geopolitical importance of our country at the US and NATO levels.
What will be the relations between the Belarusian and Ukrainian peoples when the war ends? Charter97.org asked Maxim Pleshko, Ukrainian political analyst and expert of the Center for Belarusian Communications, about it.
- It will depend on many factors. First of all, how the war ends. If we simulate that Ukraine completes its offensive and reaches the borders of 1991, then Russia and Lukashenka will crawl back, try to isolate themselves, become something like North Korea. But Russia will face internal problems. Support for Lukashenka will decline. And what will Belarusians do? If they remain silent, the attitude of Ukrainians will not change. So when will it change?
The situation will also depend on those Belarusians who affiliate themselves with the democratic opposition. Those who have left, who are fighting today in Ukraine. If they are active, Ukrainians will see it and understand that there are actually two Belarus.
We also explain Ukrainians that actually an alternative Belarus is being shaped today. It has its own flag, ideology, political class, mass media. I would like to note that your independent media environment is quite developed. There is a nascent armed force in the form of the Kalinouski Regiment volunteers.
You are forming an alternative Belarus; it should become a subject. When Ukrainians see it, they will change their attitude. There is no need to make excuses. One must act. Belarusians with a passport must become Belarusians in spirit.
Undoubtedly, free, democratic Belarus is in the national interest of Ukraine. Our Centre for Belarusian Communications promotes the idea of the Baltic-Black Sea Union. It should start with something like the Grand Duchy of Lithuania 2.0. This Baltic-Black Sea Union cannot do without Belarus. Today, there is a "Belarusian balcony" looming over Ukraine, and the political class of Ukraine is becoming aware that this problem must be solved. Poland and the Baltic States not only understand it. They act.
It's clear that our priority is to win on the battlefield. But after the war, I hope Ukraine will determine the Belarusian direction as a priority. Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking in Warsaw, said that freedom would definitely come to Belarus. As you remember, earlier in Warsaw Joe Biden said that Belarus was continuing to fight for its democracy. This proves that there is an awareness of the geopolitical importance of Belarus at the US and NATO levels.
Some time ago, thanks to the GDL, the lands of modern Ukraine were liberated from the Tatar Mongols. Who knows, maybe after our victory, the GDL 2.0 will appear, but this time there will be assistance from the side of Ukraine to liberate Belarus from occupation.
I believe that the process is under way and Belarusians need to unite, strengthen their national identity. It is important for your future. Lukashenka, by the way, and his dead-end ideology contributes to it. He has simply taken himself out of the Belarusian national context. Lukashenka has banned everything national. It means the Belarusians should become a nation.
