What can the new weapon from the US do?

The Pentagon said that Ukraine will be the first to test the "winged" Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB).

What can this weapon do? The Charter97.org website spoke about this with Petro Chernik, a Ukrainian military analyst and reserve colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

– It is necessary to take into account a very important thing: this is the latest modification, but these bombs have been working in Ukraine since the winter of 2023. The weapon showed itself very well, but given the fact that these are high-precision bombs with a special method of guidance, Russian electronic warfare systems have partially learned how to deal with them.

I emphasize that what the United States is giving us now is not a new weapon but a new batch of modernized weapons. It is very important to talk about this since in the Ukrainian information segment there is a certain illusion that this is something new – that’s not.

We will receive the latest versions, which are improved based on the American GBU-39 aerial bomb with the M26 engine. This high-precision bomb can hit targets at a distance of up to 150 km, and can change the flight path even by 180 degrees. The warhead is high-explosive fragmentation, 93 kg is an excellent weapon for the destruction of enemy weapons. For example, such a bomb will easily destroy the S-300 system, Tor-M or 2S5 Giatsint-S air defence systems. It will find them at this distance.

However, to really change something at the front, we need thousands of such bombs. I do not believe that the United States will provide that amount.

Indeed, it is a beautiful superweapon. These missiles will destroy enemy systems, also some depots or command posts may be destroyed. But there must be thousands of these small-diameter bombs to change anything.

– What are the capabilities of the Russian air defence to counter these "super bombs" today?

– There are no confirmed facts that Russian air defence shot down such bombs. There have been cases where they have been disabled by the EW systems. We will now receive an updated weapon that no one and nothing can catch.

About 120 F-16s and thousands of tons of bombs will change the situation at the front. Not numbers, but tons. And at least a thousand ATACMS missiles. That would be the Game Changer.
