European Parliament Calls For Introduction Of Economic Sanctions Against Lukashenka Regime

And demands that the Belarusian authorities release all political prisoners.

The European Parliament at today’s plenary session in Strasbourg adopted the resolution “On the ongoing repression and waves of arbitrary detentions of family members of political prisoners in Belarus”, the Charter97.org correspondent reports.

The European Parliament “strongly condemns the ongoing wave of mass arrests in Belarus and calls on the illegitimate Lukashenka regime to end its repression”. MEPs drew attention to the recent arrests of the wife of the leader of the Belarusian opposition Mikalai Statkevich, Maryna Adamovich, and the mother of political prisoner Pavel Seviarynets, Tatsiana Seviarynets. In addition, the resolution states that “UCP leader Mikalai Kazlou, head of the Belarusian Popular Front Ryhor Kastusiou, Mikalai Statkevich and Pavel Seviarynets face isolation, torture, denial of medical care, and forced labor.” MEPs also mention the charges brought in absentia against “Tsikhanouskaya’s analysts.”

The European Parliament calls on the European Council and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Deputy President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, to “respond by introducing stronger sanctions against the Lukashenka regime, including in relation to goods related to the forced labor of political prisoners, and stricter financial sanctions, as well as restrictive measures against those responsible for serious human rights violations.”

MPs called for “a further reduction in Belarus’ diplomatic presence in the EU” and for supporting victims of the regime through the use of special tools to obtain visas and residence permits.

The European Parliament “calls for the immediate, unconditional release and compensation for all political prisoners, as well as their families and those arbitrarily detained.”

Parliamentarians called on the EU, EU member states and the international community not to recognize the results of the upcoming local “elections” in Belarus.
