It is Russia's only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea.

Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian defenders struck eight Russian hostile infrastructure targets that support the war effort. Among the targets was strategic port on the Caspian Sea, through which Russia transported Iranian drones to the front lines.

This was reported by Charter97.org, citing a post by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a statement from the company Fire Point.

Eight targets in one day

Over the past day, Ukrainian forces struck eight facilities in Russia that are supporting the war against Ukraine. Among the targets hit were an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets region and a commercial seaport in Dagestan.

In addition, facilities in the Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan, and Bryansk regions were struck.

“Russia continues its terror against Ukraine every day. And every day it receives a just response,” wrote the President of Ukraine.

“FP-1 drones attacked the Russian Federation’s only ice-free port on the Caspian Sea, through which Iranian Shahed drones were delivered,” Fire Point reported.

The Makhachkala Commercial Seaport is Russia’s only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea. It operates year-round and provides maritime connectivity between Russia and the countries of the Caspian region, including Iran.

Makhachkala was also used as one of the delivery points for Iranian attack drones to Russia via the Caspian Sea. From there, the drones were subsequently transported to areas of operation against Ukraine.

In the first eight months of 2026, the port handled more than 2.9 million metric tons of cargo.

More than 2.08 million metric tons of this volume consisted of oil.

A strike and subsequent fire were reported on the port’s grounds. The exact consequences of the attack are being determined.
