The Meridian Project will study the wars of the future.
American billionaire Elon Musk will become one of the leaders of the Pentagon’s new Meridian project, which will study methods of waging future wars. This was announced by the department’s head Pete Hegset. Musk will also be joined by Palmer Lucky of the defense company Anduril Industries and former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. Their work will be coordinated by the Pentagon’s Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael.
Project participants are tasked with determining what technologies, weapons, and military capabilities the U.S. will need in the event of conflicts. The study will cover all potential theaters of war—"from the depths of the earth to near-lunar space." Among the priorities are artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, robotics, directed energy, and biotechnology. “To maintain global dominance, the United States must anticipate future operational conditions and act decisively to develop the tools that will ensure the country’s superiority,” Hegset emphasized. The final report is to be completed within 120 days. It will consist of two parts: a public report and a classified appendix containing recommendations for the top military leadership.
Musk’s involvement with Meridian will mark his first official advisory role in a U.S. presidential administration since leaving the Office of Management and Budget and the subsequent conflict with President Donald Trump. SpaceX is already collaborating with the Pentagon. In May, the U.S. Space Force awarded the company a $4.16 billion contract to develop a satellite system for detecting and tracking aerial threats, as well as a $2.29 billion contract for a military satellite communications network.
In March 2025, American newspapers reported that the Pentagon was preparing a classified briefing for Musk—who did not hold an official government position—on scenarios for a possible war with China. After this information was leaked to the media and following a harsh reaction from Trump—who stated that a businessman with business interests in China should not be shown secret U.S. military plans—the event was canceled.
