The rules of the game have changed.
Russian strikes on the South Bridge in Kyiv, which connects the capital’s right and left banks, indicate a violation of the agreements concerning the Crimean Bridge as well. This was reported in Facebook political analyst Vadym Denisenko.
“Recently, there have been several red lines in the Ukraine-Russia war. One of them is bridges. We do not strike the Crimean Bridge, and the Russians do not strike the bridges across the Dnieper. Today, this agreement has been violated,” he wrote. He believes that this strike represents a “change in all the rules of the game.”
Denisenko does not rule out that the reason for this move by Russia is that, having at least a two-month window of opportunity while Ukraine has no defense against “Shahed” missiles, the Russians decided to test whether they could damage the bridge enough to render it inoperable. According to him, targeted strikes at a single point could, in theory, be effective, which is why the Russians launched this “experiment.”
“Putin realizes that Ukraine will try to attack the Crimean Bridge. But—and this is very important—at this stage of the war, the Crimean Bridge has lost the sacred symbolic significance it had at the start of the war,” the political analyst emphasized.
According to him, Putin believes that Ukraine is currently “bound” by pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to refrain from striking oil refineries, and therefore will not dare to respond asymmetrically by escalating attacks on oil refineries
“We have no choice: we need to raise the stakes in negotiations with the U.S. and demand that it exert influence on Russia,” Denisenko emphasized.
He also noted that the date of the attack on the bridge was not chosen at random and was deliberately timed to coincide with Ukraine’s Defender’s Day.
