Axios: The Kremlin Has Not Yet Agreed To The Announced Energy Truce

The ceasefire currently applies only to the oil refinery.

Russia has not yet agreed to the energy truce with Ukraine announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Axios reported. “The Russians are thinking about it. We’ll find out soon if they’re ready,” a White House source told the publication.

He clarified, however, that the truce would involve a cessation of attacks on each other’s oil refineries. If strikes on refineries cease, the agreement could be expanded to include power plants and power grids.

Meanwhile, an Axios source in Ukraine called the “refinery-for-refinery” scheme unequal, since Russia has an extensive network of oil refineries, while Ukraine has only one, which is not operating at full capacity. “We import diesel and gasoline. We need the Russians to stop attacking our power grid,” the Ukrainian official emphasized. Trump himself is pushing for Ukraine to stop attacking Russian refineries because, in his view, these strikes are driving up gasoline prices in the U.S. “Trump is very angry. He feels that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is taking the U.S. for granted,” an Axios source in the White House said.

Trump announced the start of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine the day before, on October 11. “Both sides have agreed. Don’t break it,” the U.S. president wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. Zelenskyy, for his part, stated that this was the first time he had heard of the agreement.
