A coalition may form the government in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The German Social Democrats (SPD), the Left Party, and the Greens began formal negotiations on Monday to form a three-party coalition government in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, nearly three weeks after the regional elections, which were won by the far-right “Alternative for Germany.” This was reported by “European Truth”.
Sources involved in the negotiation process confirmed the start of talks following preliminary preparatory discussions and the approval by party leadership of the decision to hold them.
The negotiations are taking place following the state parliament elections on September 20, in which “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) emerged as the clear winner but failed to secure an absolute majority. The far-right party won 32 seats in the 71-member state parliament, while the SPD won 29 seats, and the Greens and The Left each won five. Together, these three potential coalition partners will hold 39 seats, giving them a three-seat majority and preventing the AfD from coming to power.
The SPD’s state leader, Manuela Schwesig, the leader of the Left Party Hennis Herbst, and the leader of the Greens’ parliamentary caucus Claudia Müller will issue a joint statement on Monday afternoon.
The parties are working against a very tight deadline to reach an agreement. The newly elected state parliament is scheduled to hold its first session on October 20, after which the state constitution provides for a four-week period to elect the minister-president.
