Without dismantling the imperial institutions, the democratization of Russia is impossible.
Europe’s security is impossible without the active participation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Speaking on the sidelines of the Free Russia Forum, which took place in Warsaw on October 11, one of the leaders of the Russian opposition and world chess champion Garry Kasparov told a reporter from the Charter97.org website:
— A war is currently underway—the very war for which NATO was created. NATO is not participating in it. Moreover, it is clear that the 32 NATO member states, operating on the principle of consensus, cannot create adequate mechanisms to counter Russian aggression.
Therefore, the longer we try to cling to this phantom, the longer we delay the moment when it will be possible to create real defense mechanisms. Today it is clear that any Russian aggression in northeastern Europe can be repelled by the forces of the countries located there, plus Ukraine, which is actually helping them. And so, once again, we must face the truth. Any attempts to shift responsibility from the countries capable of repelling aggression to this mythical body, which operates by consensus, simply end up helping Putin.
During a discussion at the Free Russia Forum, Garry Kasparov expressed the view that China has become a dominant factor in Russia:
— China is the main driving force behind Russia’s war against Ukraine. Because without Chinese aid, the war would end tomorrow. If Xi Jinping wants to end the war, it will end. He can call Putin, and the war will end.
China has been actively publishing maps over the past few years. Everything is clearly marked on these maps. This is one million square kilometers that Russia seized under two treaties in 1858 and 1860. All of Chinese Manchuria. China has no intention of giving them up. This is the return of historic lands, not some rocky island that still needs to be fought over. This is territory that may already have a Chinese majority.
And I think war helps in this regard. Because a significant portion of the male population’s losses in the Russian Federation occur precisely in these regions. In my opinion, the entire territory from Vladivostok to Chita has become Chinese. Only the city of Vladivostok is no longer on Chinese maps. There’s Haishenwai now, with a Chinese customs office in operation.
Garry Kasparov also stated that “the Russian Empire must be dismantled”:
— My position, and that of the majority of the Forum, is that the potential democratization of the Russian sphere must be linked to the elimination of imperial institutions and the formation of a new statehood on a voluntary basis.
