Operation "Vivaldi" Changed The Situation On The Front

In the past six months, Russia has lost nearly twice as much territory as it has seized.

Between March and September 2026, Russian forces lost control of nearly 300 square kilometers of territory; at least 147 square kilometers were liberated during Operation “Vivaldi.” This is reported by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, who assessed the Defense Forces’ successes and Russian losses on the front lines.

According to the ISW, in September 2026, Russian forces captured 175.54 square kilometers, but lost control of 256.35 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, resulting in a net loss of 80.81 square kilometers (a loss of 2.69 square kilometers per day).

The territorial change metrics for Russian forces in September were also negative: the Russians captured or infiltrated 143.2 square kilometers of territory but lost 318.38 square kilometers, resulting in a net loss of 175.18 square kilometers.

At the same time, analysts note that the statistics for September include Ukraine’s liberation of at least 147 square kilometers in the Lyman area, although Operation “Vivaldi” itself was carried out by Ukrainian forces over the preceding months.

As a result, since March 2026, Russian troops have lost a total of 293.59 square kilometers (net figure across the entire front) and have gained control of only 174.44 square kilometers.

Meanwhile, in September, Russian forces suffered 46,320 casualties; this is the third consecutive month in which losses have exceeded 40,000 personnel, and the highest monthly casualty figure for Russia in 2026 to date.
