Ice Has Been Found On Mars Where Life May Be Hiding

Its layers may contain reservoirs of meltwater and extraterrestrial microorganisms.

The water ice in the northern polar region of the Red Planet turned out to be much purer than scientists had expected. Extraterrestrial life may be hiding there.

The ice on Mars holds valuable evidence about the planet’s ancient climate. Studying this evidence could help determine whether life exists on Mars today or existed there in the past. It turns out that the water ice at the planet’s north pole contains far less dust than scientists had thought. The study was published in the journal npj Space Exploration, according to Sci News.

Planetary scientists used data from NASA’s Phoenix lander, as well as the European Space Agency’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, to assess the purity of water ice in Mars’s northern polar region.

The scientists used a physical model originally developed for Earth’s ice and applied it to data collected from various locations in Mars’s northern polar region.

It turned out that the water ice is much purer than previously thought. The results indicate that the structure of water ice in Mars’ northern polar region consists of several layers: layers with a high dust content alternate with layers of cleaner ice. Every winter, a dust-filled layer of frost forms on top of the main ice, which disappears in the summer, exposing older and purer ice. Previous studies showed that the top layer of water ice contains 25% dust by mass, but new data have shown that it contains only 3%.

These ice layers contain important information about Mars’ ancient climate. It is believed that thousands of years ago, the ice formed as a result of snowfall.

Scientists believe that layers of dust and ice may create conditions conducive to life on Mars. Dark layers of ice, which contain more dust, can trap sunlight and help form reservoirs of meltwater inside the ice.

Such reservoirs may provide conditions suitable for extraterrestrial microorganisms. On Earth, active microbial life can be found in such reservoirs of meltwater inside ice during the summer. In winter, the liquid water freezes, and the microorganisms enter a state of dormancy until the following summer. If life can exist under such conditions on Earth, then perhaps it also exists on Mars and may have existed there in the past. To find this out, further research into water ice in the northern polar region of the Red Planet is needed.
