Volker: Why Not Hold A Meeting Between Xi And Trump To Decide Russia's Future?

Easing the pressure on Russia only encourages Putin to continue the war.

Former U.S. State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker believes that a possible meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the illegitimate president of Russia Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine would demonstrate the White House leader’s weakness. He published his comments on this matter to CNN on October 21 in X.

According to Volker, Trump’s agreement to such a meeting would make him “look rather weak,” since it would appear that Putin and Xi Jinping are joining forces against the U.S. president to say, “Do something about Ukraine.”

“Second, there should be no such meeting on Ukraine’s future without Ukraine’s participation. So it must include President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy. You might as well ask, ‘Why don’t you hold a meeting between Xi and Trump to decide Russia’s future?’” Volker said.

He also emphasized that Trump is, in effect, prolonging the Russian-Ukrainian war by suspending support for Ukraine and blocking the imposition of new sanctions. The diplomat noted that easing the pressure only encourages Putin to continue the war.

“You know, President Trump hasn’t explained exactly how this [suspension of sanctions] serves U.S. national interests. In my view, this will definitely replenish the Kremlin’s coffers. It will prolong the war in Ukraine, as Russia will be able to continue its military operations. Moreover, we have every reason to believe that Russia will continue to support Iran. So I don’t see how this helps the U.S.—especially since no explanation has been provided,” Volker added.
