The world has seen what a people who want freedom are capable of.
Belarusians are comparing the events currently unfolding in Serbia—The Opposition’s Triumph—with the 2020 protests. Many are drawing parallels between the two countries and are genuinely pleased that there is now one less pro-Russian authoritarian leader in Europe.
The website Charter97.org has compiled comments from our compatriots on social media regarding the parliamentary elections in Serbia, held on October 25, and the victory of the “Student List”:
- Serbia is yesterday’s Belarus. Serbia is tomorrow’s Belarus.
- Belarus set such a high standard for struggle, such a level of resistance that has never been seen anywhere else. There have never been protests of the same caliber as ours. We may not have succeeded in overthrowing the dictator, but we all saw what a civil society should look like.
- Serbia is fortunate not to share a border with Russia. And Vučić didn’t run around with an automatic rifle (defending himself against his own people) or say, “I won’t leave until you kill me.” When Belarusians are accused of “not pushing hard enough,” I want to say: check your privilege.
- The Serbian protests reminded me a lot of those in Belarus, though the Serbs are certainly tougher and more confident—they didn’t even take off their slippers while sitting on the bench.
- We’re young enough to still witness the fall of regimes. The world is unpredictable, and as we can see, what seemed like mere hope yesterday is reality today.
- Belarus has truly demonstrated the highest level of resistance.” The world has seen what a people who want freedom are capable of. I know firsthand that your example has inspired Ukrainians, Hungarians, and Serbs alike.
- Some time after the revolution in Serbia, “Zubr” appeared in Belarus. I think that even now, what’s happening around us will influence us.
- Yes, it seems like it’s been a long time since so many people in Europe took to the streets against a dictator, as they did in 2020. They didn’t crush the movement—I agree. It’s all ahead of us.
- They didn’t finish the job because Russia is right next door. The Serbs have it easier in that regard. But, thank God for Ukraine—it looks like Russia won’t be able to terrorize its neighbors for much longer.
