More Than A Thousand "people's Militia" Units Will Be Formed In Belarus

Is Lukashenko preparing for war?

Belarus plans to establish more than a thousand people’s militia units across all regions of the country, according to the state-run propaganda channel STV.

“The country plans to establish more than a thousand people’s militia units. Practical training for volunteers is ongoing,” the channel reported.

During the drills, militia members practice combating saboteurs and securing residential neighborhoods, as well as learning how to handle weapons and operate drones.

Alexander Lukashenko on October 16 called for expanding the network of “people’s militia” units. During a visit to training exercises in the Vitebsk region, he stated that every village council should have such a unit. According to him, in the event of military action, residents must be able to defend themselves and their homes.

Lukashenko signed the “Law on the People’s Militia” on July 17, 2023. The document established the legal framework for citizens’ voluntary participation in enforcing martial law, assisting law enforcement agencies, and protecting property from criminal acts.

According to the law, the units are formed by local authorities and defense councils. Volunteers carry out their duties in the territory where their unit is formed and are stationed in their places of residence. The Ministry of Defense supplies them with weapons and ammunition.
