The European Parliament's lead negotiator on the Digital Networks Act has prepared a draft.
MEP Michał Kobosko, the European Parliament’s lead negotiator on the Digital Networks Act, called for preventing Elon Musk’s SpaceX from gaining control over the EU telecommunications market. Mr. Kobosko spoke about this Financial Times.
According to him, Europe “cannot simply wake up one day to find that SpaceX is seeking to completely control the European market, while we do nothing.” Michał Kobosko added that his proposal includes strict criteria for “sovereignty and sustainability” regarding pan-European mobile spectrum licenses.
In early October, SpaceX acquired a portfolio of radio frequencies in the 800 MHz band from the investment firm Grain Management for $8 billion. Elon Musk’s company needed this deal to deploy Starlink Direct-to-Cell, a direct satellite mobile communication service, in the United States. In May, the European Commission proposed reserving part of the spectrum for direct connections between smartphones and satellites by European operators, which would limit Starlink.
