The interior ministers of Lithuania and Poland discussed evacuation plans in the event of a Russian attack on the Baltic states.
This is reported in an article by RMF24.
If the threat from Russia escalates, at least one million people could be evacuated from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to Poland.
In the Lithuanian town of Lazdijai, near the Polish border, a reception center for evacuees is being set up. Its operations were already tested during recent civil defense drills in Lithuania.
Lithuanian Minister of the Interior Martinas Katelinas stated that the relevant plans provide for the evacuation of at least one million people to Poland.
“Plans to evacuate people from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to Poland in the event of an escalation of the threat from Russia include at least one million people,” said Katelinas.
The head of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kerwinski reported that following large-scale civil defense exercises in Lithuania, Polish evacuation plans will be updated.
According to him, the Podlaskie Voivodeship will bear the greatest burden in receiving evacuees. At the same time, the relevant scenarios are still being refined.
“We must prepare for various crisis situations. Lithuania naturally lies on the path to the European Union, so we must also be ready for this,” Kerwinski noted.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz had previously stated Poland’s readiness to assist Lithuania with evacuations in the event of a Russian attack.
