India Has Taken A More Active Role In The Negotiations Regarding The War In Ukraine

My network of contacts has expanded.

India is beginning to play a more active and direct role in efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, engaging with both sides on issues such as shipping and de-escalation. According to the country’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in recent months India has become “somewhat more involved, going beyond simply calling for peace,” writes Bloomberg.

The publication notes that these remarks signal New Delhi’s shift toward a more active stance after several years of a cautious approach to the war, partly due to its longstanding ties with Russia.

“We are holding talks on this issue with both Russia and Ukraine. We are trying to help, starting with the issue of maritime security in the Black Sea,” the official said, adding that the talks also covered energy supplies and “the possibility of refraining from retaliatory strikes.”

Talks with Russia and Ukraine began after Indian sailors were killed and injured in attacks in July, prompting New Delhi to raise the issue with Moscow and Kyiv.

According to Jaishankar, the scope of the discussions has broadened: from maritime safety issues, they moved on to discussing ways to facilitate grain exports through the Black Sea, and subsequently, energy supplies were also added to the agenda. Although India maintains contact with both sides, the minister cautioned that there is no certainty yet that an agreement will be reached.

India is calling for a cessation of hostilities, but refrains from criticizing the Kremlin and does not participate in UN votes on resolutions condemning the war.
