The Latvian Parliament Has Banned Municipal Council Members From Traveling To Belarus

The parliament of the Baltic country has also imposed a restriction on Belarusians.

The Latvian Seimas has adopted amendments to the Law on Restricting Activities That Threaten National Security. According to LSM, these amendments impose a ban on travel to Belarus and Russia for local government deputies.

Previously, such a restriction applied to certain categories of officials and employees, as well as to Seimas deputies.

The authors of the amendments explain the new measure by noting that local government officials have access to detailed information about critical infrastructure, civil defense plans, transportation and logistics hubs, and other resources available to municipalities.

In addition, the Latvian Seimas today passed a law prohibiting citizens of Belarus and Russia from owning critical infrastructure in the country.

Critical infrastructure is divided into several categories: A, B, C, and D. The latter category includes facilities whose destruction or impairment—or the disruption of critical services in the event of war—would pose a significant threat to public and national security.

This category includes, for example, food production and distribution, heat supply, the distribution of medicines, and other sectors.
