This is the first time Ukrainians have struck a target of this kind.
Yandex confirmed a cyberattack by the Ukrainian Defense Forces on the “Yandex DC Sasovo” data center in Russia’s Ryazan Region. As a result of the attack, the center has ceased operations, according to a statement from the company’s press office.
According to the company, a fire broke out at the data center due to the attack by Ukrainian UAVs, affecting part of the infrastructure. Operations at the data center have now been completely halted, so some Yandex services may be unavailable to users. Emergency services in Sasovo are working to address the aftermath of the strikes.
The data center was attacked on the night of October 8. As noted, this is a response to the strikes by the Russian army on civilian data centers in Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine. Prior to this, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had never “visited” Russian data centers.
A fire at Yandex caused a major outage. The issues affected computing power, networks, storage and databases, cloud services, security systems, and other areas of operation at Russia’s largest technology company.

The construction of the data center cost Yandex more than 6 billion rubles.
