Moscow Faces A Transportation Crisis

At least 62 flights were completely canceled.

Air traffic in Moscow was suspended under Operation "Carpet" on October 9. Due to a drone swarm, planes were unable to land at or take off from the capital's airports. “Dialog” looked into the details.

The disruption affected all three of Moscow’s airports: Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo. According to the latest data, at least 62 flights were completely canceled, and another 370 were delayed.

At Vnukovo, 158 flights did not depart on time, and 38 were canceled. At Sheremetyevo, 157 flights were delayed, and another 11 were canceled. At Domodedovo, 58 flights were delayed, and 13 were canceled. As of now, airspace restrictions over the Russian capital remain in effect. According to the Kremlin-friendly publication *Kommersant*, the frequency of flight cancellations in Russia doubled from January through September 2026 due to drone attacks. More than 7.6 million people waited over three hours for their flights. This is 2.5 times more than in 2025.

It should be noted that on September 1, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy effectively declared a blockade on air travel to Russia. He warned airlines that use Russian airspace that it is now unsafe there.
