Polish PM: Russia May Attack NATO Country In Short Term
Donald Tusk

It's a matter of months, not years.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that Russia could attack a NATO country in the short term - a matter of months, not years. At the same time, he raised concerns about whether the U.S. is ready to fulfill its obligations to NATO to defend Europe in the event of such an attack.

"For the whole eastern flank, my neighbors ... the question is whether NATO is still an organization ready, politically and logistically, to react, for example, against Russia if it tries to attack," he said in an interview with Financial Times.

Tusk stressed that his words should not be taken "as skepticism about NATO's Article 5, but rather as 'hopes that guarantees on paper will turn into something very practical.'"

"This is really serious. I'm talking about the short term, months rather than years," Tusk said, referring to a potential Russian attack.

Tusk said he has "no complexes" about U.S.-Polish ties, but the problem is how those ties would manifest themselves in the event of a practical threat.

"I want to believe that [Article 5] is still valid, but sometimes, of course, I have problems," he added. "I don't want to be so pessimistic ... but today we also need a practical context."

Tusk gave the example of how some 20 Russian drones violated Polish airspace last year, and some NATO allies were reluctant to consider it an attack.

"I had problems on the night of September when the Russians carried out this rather large-scale provocation with drones. It was not easy for me to convince our NATO partners that this was not an accidental incident, but a well-planned and prepared provocation against Poland," he recalled.

He added that some NATO allies "found it much easier to pretend that nothing happened."

"So I want to make sure that if something happens, ... Russia will know that the reaction will be tough and unambiguous," he said.

He noted that real tools and real power in terms of defense assets and mobility of armed forces between countries are needed for Europe to repel this blow.

"Paradoxically, if you have any positive aspects of the Ukrainian war, this is one of them: Europe is increasingly aware that we will be together in military aspects [and] defense," he said.
