Media: Russian Ship With Secret Cargo For North Korea Was Hit By A Barracuda Torpedo

The West may have deliberately sunk the vessel Ursa Major.

Western countries may have carried out a "daring special operation" to strike the Russian ship Ursa Major carrying a secret cargo for North Korea, CNN investigators have found. To do so, they probably dared to fire a Barracuda torpedo at the ship, and the nature of the breaches on board proves it. What happened to the Russian Federation cargo ship that sank without a trace on December 23, 2024, in the Strait of Gibraltar 96 km off the coast of Spain?

The Ursa Major was carrying two nuclear reactors to North Korea, and the torpedo strike was the only way to stop the dangerous equipment that the Kremlin had sent to Kim Jong-un, the investigation said. The media outlet called such actions "a rare and dangerous intervention by the Western military." It also noted that the reactors made the "journey" two months after Pyongyang sent its soldiers to help the Russian Armed Forces.

Media has reported on unusual activity around the site where the Ursa Major ship sank. In particular, American WC135-R reconnaissance planes with sensors to detect nuclear emissions circled there twice in 2025. Earlier, the Russian landing ship Ivan Gren appeared there, and after its visit four explosions were heard. At the same time, the captain of the sunken ship told Spanish law enforcers that on board there were indeed components for two nuclear reactors for building submarines, but without nuclear fuel. Meanwhile, investigators have familiarized themselves with the details of the investigation. The documents officially indicate that the Ursa Major's hull may have been penetrated by a rare type of torpedo.

"The investigation suggests that a hole measuring 50 by 50 centimeters in the hull of the 'Big Bear' [Ursa Major] was probably formed by a Barracuda supercavitation torpedo," Spanish law enforcement officials determined.

The article cites several pieces of evidence that a Barracuda torpedo was involved. In particular, the ship had its first problems on December 22: it suddenly slowed down, and the captain did not understand the cause. The next day they heard 2-3 explosions in the engine room, as a result of which two crew members disappeared without a trace. All in all, there were recorded holes of appropriate size in the board. At the same time, other experts spoken to by CNN clarified that it could be a magnetic mine that was attached to the board. At the same time, the media outlet wrote that Spanish authorities and the Pentagon ignored inquiries about the possibility of using Western weapons to strike a Russian ship

Strike on a Russian ship - what happened to the Ursa Major

Investigators detailed the history of the Ursa Major vessel, which was moored in Syria and Ust-Luga, fulfilling an order from the Russian government. It is also specified that shortly before the incident, Kim Jong-un published a photo of a submarine that would have been powered by a nuclear reactor. Western fears that the DPRK would obtain such military hardware and led to the events in the Mediterranean Sea, the article said.

"The mysteries of his cargo and how it sank lie on the sea floor," CNN concluded.

Ursa Major - the story

Focus wrote about the events of the Ursa Major, which occurred in December 2024 off the coast of Spain. Its own investigation was published by LaVerdad media. It turned out that the problems of the Russian ship began on December 22, it was noticed by the coast guard, turned to the captain, but he assured that everything was fine. On December 23, the "Mayday" signal was sounded and rescuers arrived at the scene of the incident. A photo from the scene shows the ship tilted to starboard after being hit by an unknown weapon.

According to the investigation, the ship was heading from Ust-Luga to Vladivostok and was carrying VM-4SG nuclear reactors for the DPRK. On December 23, the Russian warship Ivan Gren was also there, and after a new series of explosions, the Ursa Major sank to a depth of 2.5 kilometers. A year later, the Russian research vessel Yantar passed over this place, which could have lifted the secret cargo to the surface, the investigation said.

It should be noted that during the Russian-Ukrainian war, other attacks on Russian ships took place. For example, in December 2026, it became known about a strike on a tanker near Turkey, which was carrying Russian oil.

Reminder, in April 2026, RFI media told about Ukrainian bases in Libya and the possibility of strikes on Russian ships by boats that are launched from the coast of this African country.
