After the completion of the large-scale inspection of the armed forces, Belarus will continue point-by-point mobilization of military units to check their combat readiness. This was stated by dictator Alexander Lukashenko. "Further, as I promised, we will point-by-point immobilize units in order to prepare them for war," Lukashenko said during a meeting with Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin. His words were quoted by BelTA.
During a report on the army's readiness, Lukashenko demanded that shortcomings be eliminated. "I very much expect that this process will not end, that the army leadership and, above all, the minister will pay the most serious attention to the shortcomings that have been uncovered after this inspection," the dictator stressed.
In late March, Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said that Belarus was increasing the scale of inspections amid growing external threats. According to him, the comprehensive inspection of combat and mobilization readiness, which began on March 11, became one of the largest in the history of the army. As part of it, about 5 thousand persons liable for military duty were called up from the reserve. In April, Lukashenko said at a meeting on the results of this inspection: "We are preparing for war..... We don't want war, but the army is designed for that. If suddenly someone decides to talk to us and look at us through the gun sights, we will respond. That is what we are preparing for." He also said that in case of war Belarus could increase the number of troops to half a million people.
In March last year, Lukashenko signed a decree "On the transfer of state bodies and other organizations to work in wartime conditions." The decree coordinates the work of state bodies in wartime and defines a number of organizations, the heads of which can be given military ranks in case of need. "The issuance of the decree will ensure systematic and smooth functioning of the state apparatus in the period of growing military threat and in wartime," Lukashenko's press service said at the time.
A month before Lukashenko urged citizens to prepare for the third world war "both mentally and strategically." "Let's discard all illusions about the possibility of a diplomatic settlement of the global conflict. International law is not able to relieve the tension either," he said. Lukashenko noted the trend toward NATO expansion, the threat from the "collective West" and added that Belarus is "in the epicenter of the protracted largest military and political crisis."
