The latest development incinerates enemy drones in seconds.
Ukrainian specialists have created an innovative AI-based laser system capable of effectively destroying Russian Shahed. The cutting-edge weapon will help solve the critical problem of the colossal cost imbalance between air defense missiles and cheap enemy UAVs, writes 19FortyFive.
Ukrainian company Celebra Tech has developed a counter-rocket laser system called Trident ("Trident"). The developers claim it incorporates AI-based target detection and tracking that works in parallel with an integrated radar and command and control module.
The AI-based system is reportedly capable of burning a hole in a Shahed drone from over three miles away in a matter of seconds.
The new laser system should make a dramatic difference in defending the skies and saving costly missiles. As the publication's analysts noted, the tragic disparity in the early days of the war was the use of "$5 million air defense missiles to shoot down $20,000 drones." According to experts, this cost imbalance was completely unsustainable for the country's defense.
The Trident system's trailer-mounted laser burns through armor in 3-4 seconds. According to available information, the system has already been successfully tested against targets with diameters ranging from 17 to 33 centimeters. In particular, the laser has proven effective against electronic and optical guidance systems, as well as structural elements such as wing surfaces.
The Trident system is currently approaching initial operational readiness. At the same time, many technical details of the development, in particular the exact laser power, battery capacity and specifics of the cooling system, are still a mystery.
