The Kremlin is trying to pass off the stalemate on the front as an "offensive."
Dictator Vladimir Putin, amid net territorial losses in Ukraine, has reiterated the imminent end of hostilities, explaining that the Russian army's "offensive" on the front. "As for my statement that, in my opinion, things are coming to an end. I made this statement for a reason, but on the basis of analyzing the situation on the battlefield, and there our troops are advancing in all directions, you see, every single day," Putin said, writes The Moscow Times.
Analogous statement he made on May 10. At the time, Putin also said the Russian invasion of Ukraine was nearing completion. At the same time, he claimed: the war was in its fifth year because of the leaders of the "globalist direction of Western elites" who, "fighting against Russia by the hands of Ukrainians," had persuaded Kiev not to sign a peace agreement reached, according to Putin, between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul in 2022.
Today, May 29, Putin also said that contacts on Ukraine were being maintained, but that full-fledged negotiations were not currently underway. In addition, he said that Russia "has never had aggressive intentions" toward European countries. "Statements by European politicians that they are preparing for war with Russia are nonsense," he said.
Separately, Putin commented on the Western media's reaction to the strike on a hostel in Starobelsk. "These are means of mass fooling, not the media," he said. According to the AFU, the strike destroyed the headquarters of the Russian Rubicon UAV unit, while the Russian side claims that college students were killed.
