This is a priority direction for Kiev.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are rapidly increasing the number of medium-range drone strikes against Russian forces, demonstrating the growing capabilities of the Ukrainian army, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has said. Kiev is increasingly relying on so-called "medium-range strikes" to hit logistics centers, troop concentrations and air defense systems dozens of kilometers behind the front line.
The number of strikes at ranges of more than 20 kilometers has doubled since March and quadrupled since February, Reuters wrote. "And there will be even more. This is a priority," the Ukrainian leader said on social media.
Ukraine is reportedly actively mastering medium-range strikes - targeting objects beyond the range of FPV drones - as it develops its own defense sector and seeks to reduce its dependence on Western aid.
Logistics, ammunition depots and command posts
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry previously reported that Ukrainian forces carried out more than 160 medium-range strikes at a range of 120-150 km during April. Targets included more than 65 logistics and ammunition depots, 33 drone control points and workshops, and 17 troop command posts both in occupied Ukrainian territories and in Russian border regions.
"We are hitting resources, disrupting supplies and reducing the intensity of shelling, as well as troop mobility. The April strikes are a systematic campaign to deplete Russia," the statement said.
The intensification of these efforts comes amid increased pressure by Russian forces on key, heavily fortified cities in the east in an attempt to capture the rest of Ukraine's war-torn Donetsk region, the media outlet said.
Preparing the ground for long-range strikes
While outnumbered and outgunned on the battlefield, Ukraine has also intensified attacks on energy and military-industrial facilities deep inside Russia to weaken the Kremlin's war machine.
In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have launched multiple strikes on a seaport and oil refinery in Russia's Tuapse region in the country's southwest, sending clouds of black smoke billowing and spilling oil into the Black Sea. Ukraine also hit Russian military-industrial facilities, including defense production facilities in the city of Cheboksary at a distance of about 1,500 km, using Flamingo cruise missiles of its own design.
Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's drone forces, said that in April his units hit 25 air defense systems, as well as 13 radar stations and electronic warfare systems, to help pave the way for Kiev's long-range strike campaign.
"Consistent and regular destruction of air defense systems at the operational level opens corridors for building up deep strikes against facilities of the military-industrial complex and energy sector," he stressed.
