It became known how the SBU managed to thwart the assassination attempt.
The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a hitman who tried to kill a high-ranking AFU official on Russia's assignment for the "anniversary of May 9".
The SBU reports.
The SBU's counterintelligence service has reportedly prevented a high-profile terrorist attack in Odessa. A Russian agent who tried to liquidate a high-ranking official of the AFU Navy was detained in the regional center.
The detention occurred thanks to the SBU's round-the-clock proactive work and the timely report of a concerned citizen who contacted the Security Service's hotline with a report about a suspicious person.
The Russian security services planned to kill the officer on May 9 in order to create a favorable information background for the Kremlin to celebrate "victory day".
According to the investigation, the killer planned to ambush the Ukrainian military officer near his residence and was going to shoot him with a machine gun. The attacker was supposed to open fire when the officer was driving his car while leaving the yard.
Counterintelligence officers and special forces of the SBU's Alpha Center foiled the attempt and detained the killer on May 8.
The case materials show that the defendant was a recidivist from Donetsk region, recruited by the enemy, who had previously served a sentence for premeditated murder. The man came to the attention of the Russians when he was looking for "easy money" in profile Telegram-channels.
After recruitment, he arrived in Odessa, where he rented an apartment to prepare for the assassination attempt. First, he tracked the Ukrainian soldier's premises, conducted additional reconnaissance of the surrounding area and selected locations for the ambush.
The agent then received from his Russian handler the coordinates of the caches, from which he took an AK-74 assault rifle and two magazines. The killer used a double-bottomed bag to conceal the weapons while moving around the city.
At the time of the searches, the detainee was seized an assault rifle with ammunition and a cell phone from which he coordinated his actions with the Russian intelligence officer.

SBU investigators informed the agent of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
ch. 2, Art. 111 (high treason committed under martial law);
h. 3, Art. 15, Art. 258 (incomplete attempt to commit a terrorist act).
The attacker is now in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
