Due to an increased air leak in the transition compartment of the Zvezda module of the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts of the Crew-12 mission have been transferred aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft docked to it, NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens said. "Following the new leaks, Roscosmos has decided to conduct a larger repair operation on Friday, June 5," Interfax reported her statement as saying. Russian cosmonauts are in charge of it.
The order from NASA's mission control center to move to Crew Dragon and put on spacesuits was given on Monday, a U.S. space agency spokesman told Reuters. They were instructed on Friday to prepare for a possible evacuation, he said.
The ISS crew has been searching for and fixing an air leak in Zvezda since August 2020. On July 31, 2025, Sergey Krikalev, Roscosmos' deputy general director for manned programs, said that the leak has significantly decreased after repairs but has not been definitively eliminated. It had been relatively minor in recent months but doubled in volume on Monday, a senior NASA official told Reuters.
The Crew-12 crew includes two American and one French astronaut, as well as a Russian cosmonaut.
Blogger and space popularizer Vitaly Egorov called the work to fix the leak "planned." "As a last resort, if the leak intensifies, it is always possible to close the hatch between the chamber and the main space of the station module," he added.
