Under the guise of providing employment, people are taken to Russia and sent to fight.
Botswana’s Ministry of International Relations has reported a sharp increase in the number of citizens who are being deceived or coerced into fighting on Russia’s side in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Bloomberg.
Today, Saturday, the ministry issued a statement warning citizens not to accept job offers without verifying their authenticity. The reason is that many are being deceived into traveling abroad and then forced to participate in hostilities against Ukraine.
“The number of Botswana citizens being misled into such schemes is growing at an alarming rate. (The Ministry—Ed.) continues to receive heart-wrenching calls from Botswana citizens already on the front lines, describing the dangerous conditions they face,” the statement said.
Bloomberg noted that individuals who recruited Africans to participate in the war in Russia had previously been arrested and charged in countries such as Kenya and South Africa.
Incidentally, a February report by the nonprofit organization Inpact, which runs the All Eyes On Wagner program, stated that at least 316 Africans had been killed in battles against Ukraine.
Kenya, for its part, has stated that 1,000 of its citizens were recruited for the war.
