A Trump supporter sharply criticized Russia.
Laura Lumer, an American far-right blogger and supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, posted a video from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in which she sharply criticized Russia for its attacks on Ukrainian holy sites. She stated that the Kremlin cannot call itself a defender of Christianity if it attacks one of Ukraine’s oldest monasteries.
According to the video she posted on her X page, she visited the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to show the aftermath of the Russian attack that took place on June 15. In her post, Lumer wrote: “Putin organized a drone strike against Jesus Christ.”
At the beginning of the video, the blogger referred to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as the oldest monastery in Ukraine and showed the interior of the church, highlighting its architecture, frescoes, and gold leaf decoration.
According to her, during the Russian strike, two “Shahed” drones shattered the church’s windows, and debris fell inside the building. In particular, this nearly led to a major fire, as a significant portion of the church’s interior is made of wood covered with gold leaf.
The blogger also cast doubt on the Kremlin’s claims about defending Christian values. She emphasized that Vladimir Putin regularly positions Russia as a “defender of Christianity,” but, in her view, such statements contradict the attacks on religious monuments in Ukraine.
Lumer drew particular attention to the spot where shards landed after the attack. She stated that the damaged windows are located directly behind images of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, leading her to make the emotional conclusion that the Russian military “tried to strike Jesus Christ with a drone.”
“I consider it sheer hypocrisy that Vladimir Putin constantly portrays Russia as a defender of Christianity. He speaks of the ‘denazification’ of Ukraine and justifies the invasion by claiming a desire to make it part of his Christian empire. But if Russia is truly defending Christianity, then why attack Ukraine’s oldest monastery with drones? What struck me most was not even the strike itself, but the angle at which the drones flew into the church. It gives the impression that Putin and the Russian military were trying to strike Jesus Christ with a drone,” she says in the video.
During the tour, according to the blogger, she was also told that the image of the Virgin Mary was damaged as a result of the explosion. She noted that soot marks from the fire remained on the icon, which subsequently had to be cleaned off.
“I just took a tour of the Lavra and was told that the icon of the Virgin Mary caught fire after the strike. It’s hard to make out now, since the fire damage has been cleaned up, but if you look closely, you can see that the red color on her clothing has darkened, and traces of burnt soot remain on the icon, which had to be washed off. I was also told that it was the Virgin Mary who supposedly protected Jesus Christ from the fire, since all the smoke and debris from the ‘Shahid’ fell precisely on her image,” the blogger explained.
At the end of her speech, Lumer criticized some American right-wing commentators and influencers who speak positively about Russia. She stated that Russia cannot be called a bastion of Christianity or freedom if its army is striking ancient Ukrainian holy sites.
According to the blogger, Russian propaganda is trying to portray Russia as a defender of traditional values; however, in her opinion, attacks on religious sites completely contradict such claims.
“It disgusts me to hear how some American influencers and representatives of the alt-right, in particular Tucker Carlson, Candice Owens and Nick Fuentes, call Russia a bastion of freedom, hope, and Christianity. You cannot seriously claim to be defending Christian values while simultaneously launching drone strikes against Ukraine’s oldest monastery and effectively attempting to destroy an image of Jesus Christ. “I wanted to show this video because people are constantly being bombarded with Russian propaganda. In my opinion, you can’t call yourself a defender of Christianity if you’re trying to strike Jesus Christ with a drone,” the woman said.
In addition, the deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Serhiy Kislitsa also wrote about Laura Lummer’s visit to Ukraine on his Facebook page. According to him, they spoke, after which they visited the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra together. He noted that even for him, seeing once again the aftermath of the Russian strike on the holy site—which, in his words, “blew up the heart of Christianity with a drone”—was a very powerful and moving experience. Kislitsa also thanked Lumer for taking the initiative to visit Ukraine at this particular time.
As a reminder, on June 15, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, the the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged—the strike caused the roof of the Cathedral of the Dormition to catch fire. Thanks to the prompt actions of the clergy and rescue workers, ancient icons, liturgical objects, and other sacred artifacts were successfully evacuated from the Lavra’s grounds.
