Rubio Announced A New Approach To Achieving Peace In Ukraine

The U.S. Secretary of State spoke after meeting with Lavrov.

To reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, “new ideas” must be brought to the table. This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. According to The Guardian reports, Rubio noted that the proposals put forward so far “were not acceptable to Ukraine at the time, and I don’t think they will be acceptable to it now; moreover, they will most likely be even less acceptable to it.”

“If peace is to be achieved, it will be through new ideas and concepts, and we are prepared to offer some of them in an appropriate setting and format, should the opportunity arise and the conditions be right,” he said.

Rubio was also asked to comment on a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry following the meeting, which said that the U.S. should not sell weapons to Ukraine.

In response, the U.S. Secretary of State emphasized that there had been no change in Washington’s policy.

He also stated that U.S. President Donald Trump believes that “this is a stupid war,” and that the U.S. is ready to help broker a deal.

“We want a peace agreement. We want the war to end. We are ready to play any constructive role to bring the war to an end, and this will require something that both Russia and Ukraine can agree on,” he noted.

At the same time, Rubio emphasized that this won’t happen in a single meeting; it will require a lot of work.

Speaking about his meeting with Lavrov, Rubio noted that he had a “good, frank conversation” about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is a “very bloody war” in which the Russians are now “suffering from strikes deep within their territory; which was not the case at the end of the year.”

But “winter will still hit Ukraine, and they will obviously have to defend their airspace,” he added.

Rubio emphasized that Ukraine, too, has paid a huge price.

“That’s why I think both sides should have an incentive to end it. That is the challenge: [to find] an outcome that satisfies both sides. We have tried, and will continue to try, to find a middle ground that will lead to this, and we are ready to play that role if the opportunity arises. We are stating this today, and we have stated it in the past as well,” he concluded.
