Why Belarusian retirees are looking for work.

A Threads user with the username _ladyri10 writes about the situation many of the country’s elderly residents find themselves in.

“Another surreal moment: Today my grandmother was watching the news, and they were reporting that there’s some kind of boom going on right now—pensioners are flocking to get jobs, and the number of working pensioners has surpassed the number of working young people. One of the reasons for this boom is low pensions. I feel really bad for retirees that even after retiring, they have to go to work just to survive,” she writes.

Social media users shared details about the pensions they or their relatives receive. The website Charter97.org cites some comments:
— Unfortunately, yes. My pension recently went up to 820 rubles—it’s not just hard to live on that, it’s hard to even survive. I live alone; my roof leaks, and it’s impossible to fix it. Meanwhile, a government official’s suit costs as much as my annual pension.
— I’ve never stopped working. I can’t imagine how anyone could survive on a pension.

— I retired and I’m still working. You can’t live on a pension, and on top of that, I’m in a legal battle over 7 years of service prior to 2000. It turns out my employment record isn’t being counted. It’s nonsense.

— And how am I supposed to cover my apartment payment, workshop rent, cottage expenses, gym membership, gas and car expenses, trips and travel, and coffee shop visits on the weekends with just my pension?

— That’s why I’m out here looking for a job.
