Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a brief meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Vatican marked an important turning point in their relationship. His remarks were reported on July 24 by the publication “Obschestvennoe”.
“The first significant moment took place in Rome, at the Vatican. It was a brief meeting, but I have always emphasized that for me it was a historic moment, because in 15–20 minutes we were able to transform our relationship,” Zelenskyy said.
He did not disclose the details of their conversation, but noted that after this meeting, the tone of communication changed and greater trust developed between the parties.
“I am very happy, because the lives of so many people depend on such relations and such dialogue,” he added.
The conversation between the two leaders took place on April 26, 2025, in St. Peter’s Basilica before bidding farewell to Pope Francis. The politicians spoke privately for no more than 15–20 minutes.
