Montenegro Has Introduced Visa Requirements For Belarusians

Effective November 1.

The Government of Montenegro has issued a decree on changes to the visa regime—Russian and Belarusian citizens will now be required to have a stamp in their passports.

The visa-free regime between Belarus and Montenegro (which was then still part of Yugoslavia) had been in effect for 26 years—since February 10, 2000. But the Balkan country is in the home stretch of its accession to the European Union: having received candidate status back in 2010, it continues to adapt its domestic regulations to European requirements, which means it is forced to align its visa policy with EU standards.

At the same time, the authorities promise not to create unnecessary bureaucratic barriers: Montenegro’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it is working to simplify the visa application process, and a visa center has already opened in Russia, with plans to launch one in Belarus in the near future. In addition, the country is creating a new visa information system compatible with EU systems and Schengen Area security standards, and plans to introduce electronic visas for online applications in the future.

The list of countries requiring visas does not end there: in the future, the network for accepting applications will also be expanded to include Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Nepal, and the Philippines.
