Lukashenko's Fiasco: Russia Is Flooding Belarus With Milk

In the first five months of 2026, shipments of Russian dairy products to the Belarusian market rose by 25% compared to last year, totaling nearly $40 million, according to "Belarusians and the Market".
These figures were provided by the Agroexport Center. The main product categories driving this growth were ice cream (+49%), fermented milk products (+42%), and whey (+36%).
Belarus became the second-largest importer of dairy products by volume, trailing only Kazakhstan.
Growth in shipments to this country has stalled (only +0.3% compared to last year) and totaled $92 million. Kazakhstan became the largest buyer of Russian cheeses and cottage cheese in value terms, as well as drinking milk and cream, fermented milk products, dry milk, and ice cream.
The third-largest import market for Russia is Uzbekistan. Sales there grew by 58%, reaching $27 million. In particular, shipments of ice cream and dry milk more than doubled, while those of whey increased 1.8-fold.
In total, from January through May 2026, Russia exported dairy products worth more than $245 million to foreign markets. Compared to the same period last year, the volume of exports increased by 19%. In physical terms, shipments rose by 14%, to over 104,000 metric tons.
Cheese and cottage cheese accounted for more than 28% of export revenue, fermented milk products for 23%, ice cream for 15%, 10% to milk and cream, 8% to dry milk, and 8% to dry whey. All key dairy categories showed positive growth.
It is worth noting that Belarus has long been a net exporter of dairy products to Russia. Lukashenko considers dairy production to be one of his key projects.
